Sambuca

As far as we know, Sambuca is the only student recorder ensemble in Holland. Sambuca was founded in 1986 as a part of ESMG Quadrivium and is fully organised by students. Despite this fact or thanks to this fact music is played at a high level of quality. The ensemble represents a good mix between music and fun.

Instrumentation

Sambuca owns two tenors, two basses, two contra basses and two subcontra basses, which can all be used by the members who want to play on a bigger recorder than just the regular soprano. A worthy experience.

Repertoire

The repertoire is chosen with a fearless mind. Baroque as well as modern pieces are played. Telemann, Bach and Vivaldi are regulars in the repertoire, but pieces like ‘ Report upon: When shall the sun shine' - Paul Leenhouts and ‘ The Party' - Willem Wander van Nieuwkerk are also among the favourites. Concerts

Every year, at least one big concert is organised together with the other subassociations of Quadrivium. During most of the other concerts Sambuca is joined by another association of Quadrivium. When an opportunity presents itself, Sambuca likes to give short concerts at the university or at one of the beautiful local churches.

Conductor

Since 1997 Sambuca is directed by the inspirational Maartje van den Boom-Coppes. She studied recorder, teaching, in Maastricht by Dorothea Winter and in Kassel (Germany) by Winfried Michel. She finished her study cum laude. Her degree as a musician was completed in Utrecht, following classes from Heiko ter Schegget. Next to this she studied school music in Tilburg. During her studies she directed several ensembles and choirs. In 2005 she followed the Kurt Thomas course.

Maartje has worked as a teacher at several music schools in the province of Noord-Brabant. Since january 1999 she is a consultant at Factorium Tilburg and initiates, organizes and guides music- and dance projects for the regular educational institutions.

Rehearsals

Sambuca rehearses in the student centre ‘ De Bunker' in Eindhoven every two weeks on Thurday night from 19:30h till 22:00h.
